IV Sedation
IV Sedation Dentistry: An Option For Your Comfort And Safety
You may not be familiar with anesthesia outside of a hospital or day surgery unit, but Phoenix Endodontics Group offers a range of options for patients, depending on the procedure being performed and the specific needs involved – from local/topical numbing to IV sedation.
Our staff is trained and qualified to support your comfort through IV sedation dentistry. We partner with you, discussing the complexity of your endodontic procedure, as well as your physical and emotional comfort, to determine how best to keep you stress-free, pain-free, and anxiety-free throughout the process.
What Is IV Sedation?
Intravenous (IV) sedation is an option for dental procedures when local numbing of the tissue won’t be sufficient and general anesthesia is not warranted. Although IV sedation is also known as “conscious sedation,” actual experiences vary.
Light IV sedation may make you feel relaxed, and you may be able to answer questions from the endodontist.
Moderate IV sedation may make you feel drowsy; later on, you may not remember much about your procedure.
Heavy IV sedation does not make you unconscious, but most patients fall asleep and remember nothing about their experience.
Sedation In Dental Procedures
Our endodontists use IV sedation to manage anxiety to provide a better overall experience for our patients. IV sedation dentistry allows patients with dental phobias or severe dental anxiety to receive care without trauma or fear.
Here’s an overview of how our staff might use IV sedation in three of the most common clinical situations we see:
- Root canal therapy – In most cases, we can perform a root canal with local anesthesia only. However, IV sedation can be used when the patient has dental anxiety or the endodontist is working on numerous teeth or complex tooth roots.
- Dental implants – If you’re having teeth replaced with implants, it is considered a surgical procedure. We may use IV sedation to make sure you are comfortable during the surgery.
- Emergency dental services – Patients receiving treatment for broken or knocked-out teeth or for a tooth with a painful abscess will find IV sedation can help them relax and let the endodontist focus on stabilizing their situation.
